The 30-second version

What I can build for you

Tell me the problem. I’ll bring the build.

  • Apps built around you

A phone or desktop app that fits exactly how you or your business works, not how an app store thinks you should.

See: Fern · Anchor · AutoMile

  • Automations that run themselves

Bank alerts that log themselves, trips that track themselves, a server that sorts new files and sends one summary a day.

    See: Fern · Home server

  • Video, captions & campaigns

Interviews cut into captioned clips, a post series built from one source, a month of social scheduled.

    See: RTNNV

  • Cleanup & organizing

Photo libraries, catalogs, backups and years of messy files, sorted, de-duplicated and verified file by file.

Case studies

The biggest builds

In order of how much work went into them. Everything shown is running for real, captured from my own phone.

01

Android app · Aug – Oct

Fern

A money app that reads my screenshots and keeps itself honest against my bank statements.

The problem

Fifteen cards, several banks, and a money app that couldn't read anything. Every purchase was typed by hand, or more often, not at all.

What it does

Share a screenshot or receipt and Gemini turns it into transactions. Bank notifications land as drafts in an inbox on their own. Everything lives on the phone in SQLite.

The heavy lifting

Three years of history imported from statements in twelve formats: CSV, Excel, PDF, and one “.xls” that was secretly a web page. Transfers between my own accounts are paired so they never count as spending.

What broke

A scripted edit once deleted 1,600 lines of source code. It was rebuilt by decompiling the last working app. Later, a review screen put a red “delete” on every row, and every row got tapped. Both were fully recovered, and the rule since is that information lists never carry destructive buttons.

Where it stands

Monthly reconciling happens on the phone: drop in the statements and it reports what's missing.

02

Android app · Aug – Oct

Anchor

Screen-time limits that hold, because the way past them is a walk, not a tap.

The problem

Every screen-time app has an “ignore” button, so every screen-time app gets ignored.

What it does

It watches which app is in front and steps in three times: a gentle nudge, then a breathing pause, then a hard stop. To earn more time, you get up and tap NFC stickers in other rooms.

What we learned

Puzzles to get past the gate failed: a hard puzzle is rage at 2am, and a fun one becomes a second habit. The gates now cost time and attention, never cleverness. The walk is the feature that actually works.

The honest numbers

After seven weeks the scrolling moved from Reddit to Facebook. Anchor now tracks sections inside an app, starting with Marketplace.

03

Linux · self-hosting · Aug – Oct

The home server

From a messy movie drive to a streaming server for the whole apartment.

Where it started

223 films on a laptop drive with duplicates, missing subtitles and three naming schemes. The first job was cleaning them up and checking every file.

The build

In under a week: an Ubuntu box running Jellyfin, with automatic requests and downloads, a VPN tunnel for the downloads, and private remote access so it works away from home.

What broke

The 4 TB drive failed its health check on day one. Jellyfin silently skips album folders named “Scenes” or “Clips.” Folder names turned AC/DC into AC_DC. Each one now has a fix and a line in the runbook.

Quieter by design

It used to send 45 notifications a day. Now it sends two summaries, at 7 am and 9 pm.

04

Android + desktop · Sep – Oct

Nocturne

A dream journal you can use without waking yourself up.

The idea

Logging a dream means picking up a bright phone at 4am, which is the fastest way to forget the dream.

The design

Pure black, dim amber, and nothing blue or white. Talk, then tap “Save and sleep.” The theme follows the clock on its own.

The other half

A desktop app for reading back. Every dream is transcribed from voice, read by AI for its symbols, and filed so recurring figures, places and feelings show up as patterns over time.

Android app + widget · Aug

Windrose + Cairn

When to ride, paddle or stay in, worked out from the forecast and my own rides.

Cairn, the home-screen widget
Cairn, the home-screen widget

What it does

It scores every hour of the forecast against my six Milwaukee loops and picks the direction that puts the headwind on the way out.

Built from data

My Strava history set the defaults. I ride afternoons and evenings, and wind costs me comfort, not speed.

Cairn

One widget for the whole day: sunrise, weather, the next event, the ride window and today's spending.

Client work · Rebuilding Together Northern Nevada · Sep – Oct

RTNNV: social, video & web

TV interviews cut into captioned clips, a 25-post campaign, and a full month scheduled.

Boots & Builds highlight reel, with live event sound. Press play.

Boots & Builds

Two morning-TV interviews were transcribed word by word, cut on clean word boundaries and captioned in two formats. That made nine clips plus a highlight reel.

Safe at Home

A 25-tip aging-in-place series in five colour-coded room categories. One script generates every post, so a wording change is one edit, not 25.

Scheduling & web

October queued on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, plus a homepage banner and a blog recap.

Jul – Aug · Party mode in progress

R10Connect

Talks straight to a Garmin R10 launch monitor over Bluetooth, with no Garmin app in between. Every swing flies on a 3D range with carry, ball speed and spin, and team face-offs go up on the TV. This is the base for my golf-simulator events.

  • Bluetooth LE
  • Protocol porting
  • 3D

Aug · Complete

Driftwood

A guided and self-led meditation app with 117 narrated clips across ten sessions, an interval timer and a breath pacer.

  • Audio
  • AI voice
  • Calm design

Aug · Built

Iron Habit

A beginner dumbbell program for home that speaks as your future self. It adds weight on its own and reads calories and protein from a photo of your meal.

  • Fitness
  • AI meal photos
  • Progression logic

Aug – Oct · Running

AutoMile

My car's Bluetooth is the on/off switch: GPS logging starts on connect and the trip is saved on disconnect. 2,500 miles over 234 trips, logged with zero taps.

  • Bluetooth
  • GPS
  • Background service

Aug – Sep · In use

Photo library toolkit

Desktop tools for 2 TB of photos: relinked 20 broken Lightroom catalogs (0% to 83% found), sorted 43,600 raw files, made My Documents searchable by meaning, and keeps encrypted backups on two USB sticks.

  • Lightroom
  • Local AI search
  • Encrypted backups

How it gets made

One person, one AI, a lot of shipping

Everything here was built with Claude Code around a day job and client work. I bring the taste and the problem; Claude does the typing. None of it was coded by hand.

  1. I describe it

In plain words, often half a sentence from my phone. No spec and no wireframes.

  2. Claude builds it

Using Claude Code on my laptop: it writes the code, compiles it and installs it on my phone over USB.

  3. It proves it works

On the real device, with screenshots, logs, a real notification or a real bank statement, before anything is called done.

  4. I live with it

Then I push back. Fern went from v1.0 to v5.16 in seven weeks, one complaint at a time.

After hours two personal projects · tap to open

Two personal builds. WingBot is my second-largest project by hours; it just isn't client work.

v5 · used weekly

WingBot

An assistant for dating apps. It reads the profile on screen and drafts three openers in my own voice, learned from my past messages. It only suggests; I decide what gets sent. Shown here on my own profile.

Built

DateDeck

Deals three Milwaukee date spots from 104: it checks tonight's weather, my preferences and what I've rated before.
